After spending the holidays with my family out in Surrey, BC, I came back to Montreal to record snowfall. Snow is great and all but I’m a total west-coast’er when it comes to the winter, meaning comically unprepared. Last year, Montreal had a pretty mild winter so I didn’t really need to purchase winter gear like the Canadian Goose jacket, heavy traction boots, or those underwear long johns that everyone supposedly wears out here. This winter though looks to be an ugly one – think The Day After Tomorrow style ugly (which coincidently was filmed in Montreal). I don’t think I can pull off the jeans and double jacket combo anymore. Sad times. At least it gives me an excuse to wear my giant russian fur helmet without looking out of place.
The trip back home coincided with my sister flying in with her husband and new baby Jordan and they didn’t mind at all my sticking a camera in front of their faces all the time (see picture above). I’ve never shot babies before and I found it incredibly hard to get good shots. Babies either move too much or not at all so getting candid shots is quite tricky. As in shooting anything, prep work is more important than actually clicking the shutter button so I believe I will need to research this more by flying to Florida (where my sister and her family lives) soon. I hear it’s warm out there.
