Look for a Dance Coach Instead of a Dance Teacher

As September rolls on by, I have been getting a few inquiries about private lessons and classes here in Montreal and Toronto. Most of the times these are one-off privates about a particular technique that someone wants to work on. Those are alway...

Above is a picture of an espresso and a heated chicken wrap at Presse Café on Notre Dame Ouest. What does this have to do with getting paid? Well, when I was going through my lightroom pictures in order to pick one for this quick post, my initia...

Doin' the Jive - Party Rocking in Seattle 30's style
Posted On: 04-10-2012 | Comments: 0

One of the greatest things about living here on the West Coast, beyond the sun and mountains, is that Seattle, the mega hub of Lindy + Black Coffee, is only a 2.5 hour drive away. Seattle punches me in the heart, as I fondly remember falling in lo...

Words to Lindy Hoppers

As I travel, take workshops and meet all these great instructors in the dance scene, I started to realize that they have persevered through many of the challenges we face as growing dancers. We all focus to get us to that next level/tier/awesom...

"People will never forget how you made them feel"
Posted On: 11-24-2011 | Comments: 0

If there is an important lesson that I learned this year from being a quasi dance organizer is to accept that shit will always hit the fan. Once you accept this fact, it really is quite endearing - like a really bad joke that you haven't heard in...

Things to Work on After BluesShout 2011
Posted On: 09-12-2011 | Comments: 1

Big dance events, especially big competition dance events have drama all their own, and while BluesShout 2011 at times seemed to be a whirlwind exercise of mental fortitude, I came out of BluesShout with a renewed sense of purpose and determinati...

Posted On: 04-08-2010 | Comments: 52

I've been thinking about being a positive influence in my dance scene this past year. Quite honestly, it keeps me up at night and I wake up with all these ideas stirring in my head. So now my question to you guys/gals is: If you could improve ...

Pet Peeve: Mediocre Dancers
Posted On: 04-05-2010 | Comments: 29

What makes a great dancer great is their constant quest for self-improvement, their desire to push the limits of their dancing. I believe that awareness of or searches for weakness and a constant desire to learn and improve are hallmarks of a dedicat...

Tips for Enjoying Your Dance Outing at the Reservoir Lounge
Posted On: 12-10-2009 | Comments: 19

Social dancing at the Reservoir Lounge is like playing russian roulette with your dance outing (not to be confused with the real russian roulette which I have an inkling is played at the bar next door, "Vodka"). Sometimes you end the night having...

Quick Poll 2: Action
Posted On: 04-10-2010 | Comments: 16

Wow. The first poll definitely caught me by surprise in terms of how much everyone really cares about their respective scene. While I might not agree with some of the view points shared, the best thing about having a site like Hamfats is that peo...

DJ'ing with an Agenda
Posted On: 01-19-2010 | Comments: 12

As I get more and more DJ'ing gigs slash opportunities, one of the things that I am working on this year is trying not to DJ with an agenda. I have embarrassingly caught myself sometimes in the mindset that I am some sort of music missionary tryi...

Getting Out of the Way and Getting it Done
Posted On: 05-19-2010 | Comments: 11

Finally going to be in Toronto for an extended period for the rest of May and June. The past month and a bit has been pretty busy for me in terms of travel: Austin, Ottawa, Montreal, and Amsterdam. It'll be good to be back at home and the studio to work on some ideas stewing around in my head. I also have a bunch of blog posts that I should have written while traveling but I have this uncanny ability slash weakness to fall asleep as soon as I get on a plane. In lieu, here are a few quick notes.

Nixing Bad [Dance] Habit #1
Posted On: 11-01-2010 | Comments: 10

We all have bad habits that we're not proud of. Some of mine include chewing my nails, constantly going on conversation tangents that makes sense only to me, alcoholism, and as my coworker delightfully puts it - supporting a culture of high fives...

KLIX - Kingston Lindy Exchange

Kingston Exchange (KLIX) was the first time offering from those wily kids from Queens Swing Club. I was surprisingly pleased by how much fun I had at this event. So much fun that I actually broke the heel of my right Aris Allens during the Sunday...

Why the Yonge & Bloor Studio is Good for the Toronto Scene
Posted On: 01-11-2010 | Comments: 9

In the world of social dancing, learning and excelling on the dance floor is kind of a badge of honor. At first you are too shy to ask anyone better than you dance then a zillion hours later (only slight hyperbole), you are throwing down with the...

What I've Learned Teaching Intro to Blues
Posted On: 03-30-2010 | Comments: 9

TUX (Take 2)
Posted On: 01-18-2009 | Comments: 8

If I base my dance weekends solely on the amount of dancing I did and how much I liked the music that was played, this weekend was by far the best dance weekend I have ever had in Toronto. The two awesome bands that ...
